A Spring ISD theater arts teacher is facing felony and misdemeanor fleeing charges following a late-night police chase that began in downtown Houston and concluded at his southeast Houston home, according to court records. Neighbors described a chaotic scene in which the man, 32-year-old Tyler Canada, fled from cops while partially clothed before being arrested.
According to Houston police, the pursuit began near the theater area, where officers allege a driver in a speeding vehicle went by them on Milam Street, weaved through traffic, ran red lights, and drove the wrong way down Main Street before exiting downtown. According to investigators, the automobile drove for about 15 miles before arriving at a home in southeast Houston, where authorities discovered it parked in the driveway and called the occupant. Canada was charged with felony and misdemeanor evading arrest and released after the late-night encounter, according to ABC13 Houston.
A portion of what transpired next was recorded on a neighbor’s surveillance camera. The video has weak audio of someone asking, “Why are you here?” and “Mom, Mom” as a man sprints past the camera. Police said Canada fought officers, and they used a taser to control him. Family members told ABC13 Houston that his collarbone was shattered during the arrest, and he appeared in court the next day with his arm in a sling.
Claughton Middle School is listed as Canada’s employer in court filings, and his job title on the campus staff page is “theater arts teacher.” Tyler Canada is listed on the Claughton Middle School faculty roster, but his legal matter is still ongoing in court.
