Convicted killer arrested after man suffers brain injury at Columbus baseball game

A man suffered a serious head injury after a fight erupted at a Columbus City Schools baseball game.

According to a criminal complaint affidavit, police responded on April 21 to multiple reports of an ongoing fight in a parking lot near the Eastmoor Academy High School baseball field. Officers arrived around 7:15 p.m. and spoke with an assistant principal from Mifflin Middle School, along with other witnesses, who said everyone involved in the altercation had already left the scene.

About 30 minutes later, officers responded to a report of an assault on South 22nd Street. A man told police he had been attacked at the high school and was taken to a hospital, where doctors determined he suffered an 8mm brain bleed caused by a blow to the head.

Police spoke with witnesses who said the victim had come to the school to watch his son’s game when he became involved in a verbal dispute with another man, Jamal Stafford.

Witnesses said that after the victim walked away from the argument, Stafford allegedly struck him in the face, causing him to fall immediately and lose consciousness.

Stafford, who also faces separate charges of assault and domestic violence related to a March 3 incident, was arrested Thursday and charged with felonious assault. On Friday, a municipal court set his bond at $500,000 and ordered him to appear in court on May 8 for a preliminary hearing.

Court records show that Stafford previously served two months on an abduction charge in 2012 and nine years for aggravated murder in 2013.
