The son of a Cincinnati police officer was shot and killed in New Orleans just days before his 26th birthday, according to the police union.
FOP President Ken Kober is now seeking support for officer Shawn Dent and his family during this difficult time.
The GiveSendGo fundraiser he organized has raised $13,250 toward its $15,000 goal.
Cincinnati’s FOP Queen City Lodge, along with the city’s mayor Aftab Pureval and his wife Whitney Whitis, each donated $500. Several members of the Cincinnati Police Department have also contributed.
New Orleans police are investigating the fatal shooting of Nicholas Dent, which occurred on Saturday.
The GiveSendGo account states: “On May 2, 2026, our lives were forever changed by the tragic and senseless loss of Nicholas Dent. On what should have been a day of celebration—his 26th birthday—Nicholas was taken from us after finishing his work shift at a sports bar in New Orleans. He was shot and killed by a passenger in his own vehicle, leaving his family, friends, and community devastated.
“Nicholas was born on May 6, 2000, and in his 26 years, he built a life filled with purpose, dedication, and love for those around him. He was known for his work ethic, his loyalty, and the way he showed up for others. Whether through his job, friendships, or family ties, Nicholas made a lasting impact on the people fortunate enough to know him.
“This fundraiser is being created to support the Dent family during this incredibly difficult time. The funds will go toward funeral and memorial expenses, as well as helping the family navigate the unexpected financial burdens that come with such a sudden and tragic loss.
“No family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one in this manner, and no one should have their life taken so violently and prematurely. As we mourn Nicholas, we also aim to honor his life, preserve his memory, and support those he leaves behind.
“Any contribution—no matter the amount—is deeply appreciated. If you are unable to give, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping Nicholas and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
“Thank you for your compassion, support, and for helping us honor Nicholas Dent.
“Rest in peace, Nicholas. You will never be forgotten.”
