A Texas man allegedly told police he shot and killed his wife because he believed she “didn’t take his back pain seriously,” according to investigators who said the couple’s three children were inside the home during the shooting.
Jose Romero, 43, faces a murder charge in connection with the May 2 killing. Authorities said his wife, Yanira Marin de Romero, 39, was arguing with him when Romero allegedly shot her several times while she was inside the bathroom of their Harris County home, according to a police press release.
The couple lived in Cloverleaf, a community in the Houston metro area, and relatives later described their marriage as seemingly “perfect” in Facebook posts shared after Marin de Romero’s death.
“My heart and our family are shattered, unable to accept this reality,” one loved one wrote on May 4. “They were a marriage I could call almost perfect,” the relative added. “They only had each other since their adolescence and they moved forward together. They were our family’s pride.”
According to the CBS affiliate KHOU, three of Romero and Marin de Romero’s children — ages 3, 8 and 13 — were inside the home when the shooting happened around 1 p.m. that Saturday. None of the children were injured. Authorities found Marin de Romero suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Romero allegedly called 911 himself and reported that “he just shot his wife,” according to the department’s press release. “Upon arrival, deputies located [Romero] and detained him without incident,” the release states. “Romero told homicide detectives he shot and killed Yanira Marin de Romero because she didn’t take his back pain seriously.”
Relatives wrote on Facebook that what the family is “going through” has been “very hard.” The loved one who previously described the couple’s relationship as nearly perfect said the children “will no longer have their parents together.”
“[Marin de Romero] left this world perhaps without even knowing what happened in that moment,” the relative wrote.
Harris County Jail records showed Romero remained behind bars over the weekend.
