6-year prison sentence for man who grabbed 13-year-old, saying he ‘likes little boys and girls’

A man was sentenced to six years in prison after attempting to kidnap a random 13-year-old child off a Humboldt Park street last year, just one week after being placed on electronic monitoring for allegedly selling drugs about a block away.

Devontay Kenny, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of illegal restraint in connection with the February 24, 2025 incident that began in the 3700 block of West Division. Prosecutors dismissed child abduction and severe battery allegations.

Kenny followed the victim down the street and continuously tried to grab his attention, claiming he “likes little boys and girls,” according to court documents. The child refused to stop, and prosecutors said Kenny eventually grabbed his sweatshirt with both hands and forced him against a brick wall to block him from running away.

After wrestling with Kenny, the victim escaped and fled to a neighboring convenience store for assistance. When witnesses confronted Kenny, he attempted to convince them that he was the boy’s uncle, investigators said.

Judge John Lyke sentenced Kenny on Monday and ordered him to register as a violent offender against juveniles, claiming that the event was not sexually motivated.

According to court records, Kenny was placed under a nightly curfew with an electronic monitoring bracelet exactly one week before assaulting the youngster after police suspected him of dealing heroin and cocaine between the 3100 block of West Harrison Street and the 1100 block of North Pulaski Road. Three weeks after Kenny was accused of hitting the youngster, prosecutors dropped the drug allegations.

According to court records, Kenny has many felony convictions for narcotics-related charges, including one for aggravated robbery from 2017.
