4-Year-Old Girl Found Dead In Car May Have Been Left Behind After Daycare Carpool

A 4-year-old girl was found dead inside a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in the San Fernando Valley after she was apparently left in a neighborhood carpool for several hours in extreme heat.

Police responded around 3:40 p.m. to the 12700 block of McCormick Street in Valley Village after receiving reports of an unresponsive child inside a vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Neighbors told KTLA that the child was supposed to be dropped off at daycare but was accidentally left behind in the hot car.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Temperatures in the San Fernando Valley reached the upper 80s on Tuesday, creating dangerous conditions inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can rise rapidly within minutes.

Authorities have not said how long the child was inside the vehicle, and few additional details were immediately released.

According to KTLA, criminal defense attorney Lou Shapiro was called to the scene by the wife of the vehicle’s driver.

Shapiro told the station the driver was not the child’s parent and may have been operating a neighborhood carpool. He added that he did not know whether his client would face arrest.

“It’s always a possibility,” Shapiro said. “I’ve been told this is an active crime scene, so that could very well happen. I’m just being realistic about it.”
