A Texas man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he intentionally drove his Cybertruck into a lake, according to a social media post shared Tuesday.
The incident happened just before 8 p.m. Monday at Katie’s Woods Park Boat Ramp in Grapevine, about 25 miles north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. When officers with the Grapevine Police Department arrived at the scene, they found “a Tesla Cybertruck was in the water, near the shoreline.”
The driver reportedly told officers he deliberately drove into the lake to test the Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” feature while other passengers were inside the vehicle.
According to Tesla’s Cybertruck owner’s manual, the feature “allows Cybertruck to enter and drive through bodies of water, such as rivers or creeks.” However, Tesla also includes several warnings, noting that “The maximum wade depth is approximately 32 in. (815 mm) measuring from the bottom of the tire.”
After the driver guided his Cybertruck into the lake, “The vehicle became disabled and took on water,” police said. “The driver and passengers abandoned the vehicle and the Grapevine Fire Department Water Rescue Team assisted in removing it from the lake.”
Authorities arrested the driver and charged him with operating a vehicle in a closed section of a park or lake, failing to have a valid boat registration, and “numerous” water safety equipment violations.
“We want to remind drivers that although a vehicle may be physically capable of entering shallow freshwater areas, doing so can create legal and safety concerns under Texas law,” authorities said.
