A standard traffic stop for unlit trailer lights on U.S. 1 in Key Largo evolved into a huge narcotics seizure Friday night, leading to the arrest of two Miami residents.
Nicholas Sean Pichardo, 25, and Claudia Yero, 29, were arrested after deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stopped their vehicle. Both are now facing several felony narcotics accusations.
The incident occurred at 9:03 p.m. near Mile Marker 100, when deputies noticed a Ram pickup vehicle pulling a trailer without working trailer lights. Deputies pulled the vehicle stopped and recognized Pichardo as the driver. Pichardo’s Florida driver’s license had expired, and he appeared to be intoxicated, according to investigators. After failing a series of field sobriety tests, he was arrested.
A later search of the vehicle turned up a variety of prohibited substances. Deputies discovered a THC vape pen among three separate baggies of narcotics. According to officials, field testing on the confiscated narcotics revealed cocaine residue, a pink powdery material classified as MDMA or ecstasy, and a white powdery substance containing fentanyl.
Following the car search, Pichardo and Yero were taken to the Monroe County Jail.
Authorities discovered other narcotics on Pichardo while he was in detention. He was discovered to be carrying numerous Oxycodone pills into jail.
Pichardo and Yero have been charged with possession of fentanyl, cocaine, and MDMA. Pichardo faces additional allegations, including driving under the influence (DUI), smuggling contraband into a jail, and refusing to take a lawful urine test.
