Pennsylvania State Police released the results of its Memorial Day weekend roadway safety detail, which resulted in five deaths and hundreds of arrests.
During the weekend of May 22-25, state police reported investigating 843 crashes that resulted in 129 injuries and five deaths. Driving under the influence played a role in 59 of those crashes, two of which were fatal.
Troopers arrested 399 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, issuing 26,871 citations, including:
- 6,519 for speeding
- 1,074 for failing to wear a seat belt
- 110 for not securing children in safety seats
Compared to the Memorial Day weekend of 2025, overall crashes increased from 750 to 843, while fatalities decreased from nine to five; nevertheless, DUI-related crashes increased from 56 to 59.
While 399 drivers were arrested for DUI in 2026, this is a decrease from 519 in 2025. Speeding, child seat, and other citations were also lower than the prior holiday weekend.
It should be noted that these figures only represent instances examined by the Pennsylvania State Police and do not include incidents to which other police departments responded.
