Suspects sentenced to prison in ‘brutal’ Corryville street attack

Several suspects charged in a Corryville beating attack on three University of Cincinnati students over pizza on Short Vine learned their punishment Thursday.

Three suspects who pleaded guilty in the incident appeared before a judge, expressing regret for what happened on September 13, 2025.

Deontae Conyers apologized for what transpired, calling his behavior dumb and childish.

Austin Smith apologized for what he had done and the victims’ anguish and suffering.

Brayden Hall stated that he would not blame anything on alcohol, but that if alcohol had not been in his system that night, he believed he would have been a helper rather than an attacker in the scenario.

Conyers and Austin Smith were sentenced to 5 to 7.5 years. Brayden Hall was sentenced to 3 to 4.5 years.

“Today, my office concluded the prosecution of seven defendants involved in a brutal street attack of three people, causing harm to the victims and robbing those victims of their sense of safety,” Prosecutor Connie Pillich said. “The main instigators will spend significant time in prison, as they should. Let this be a warning: I do not take these attacks lightly, whether downtown or elsewhere, and there will be consequences.

The attack

Prosecutors claimed three persons were strolling along Short Vine with a pizza on September 13 when a group of others approached them.

According to authorities, the victims were walking away from the scene, headed home, when someone in the crowd screamed out to give them the pizza. One of the victims said no and that he was trying to go home, and that started a back-and-forth that resulted in one of them being struck in the back of the head, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Austin Smith used a weapon to hurt one of the victims.

Austin Smith used a firearm that he had with him that day and came up behind the victim and, while the victim was turned away, struck him, reaching around his body and hitting him in the face, instantly knocking him to the ground and breaking his jaw, prosecutors said.

One of the victims of the attack also addressed the judge, claiming that he protected his companion during the attack.

The victim claimed that as a result of what the men did, he had a concussion and was unable to complete his final ACFT.

The victim stated that he hoped they would have years to reflect on their actions, as well as time to seek God’s mercy and accept the judge’s decision.

The prosecution also described Hall’s involvement in the attack.

Hall was one of the most angry participants, and it was entirely his fault that there was a second attack on the ground since when the victim attempted to flee, Hall unloaded haymakers on them, according to prosecutors.

During the attack, a woman also sustained face injuries.

Other sentences

Other suspects pleaded guilty to their involvement. Joshua Ansteatt was sentenced to three years in community control. Kenneth Bolin was sentenced to 9 months in jail. Hayley Hornsbon was sentenced to two years in community control.

On May 14, Kamron Smith pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and riot and received a three-year community control sentence.
