Illegal immigrant apprehended after crashing into fuel tanker at Wawa

An unlicensed driver from Guatemala was apprehended after crashing into a fuel tanker at Wawa.

An officer was parked at Wawa on U.S. Hwy. 27/441 and County Road 466 when he witnessed a blue pickup vehicle collide with a fuel tanker that was stopped distributing fuel at 2:15 p.m. Friday, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. Glendy Catarina Lopez, 32, halted at a curb before approaching the fuel tanker.

The officer informed dispatch of the situation and began a crash investigation. He began by asking Lopez for her identity, which prompted her to hand over a Guatemalan ID card rather than a driver’s license. A check of her driving history revealed a previous citation for driving without a valid license in Leesburg, the report said.

Lopez then admitted to being ticketed for careless driving and no valid license in Leesburg roughly ten years ago. She was unable to obtain a license because she had been unlawfully in the nation for the previous 15 years. She currently worked in food service at Cody’s Roadhouse, and her children attended school, the report said.

The Guatemalan native was arrested for driving without a valid license (he had never had one). She was booked into Lake County Jail and released after posting a $500 bond.
