One person taken into custody after police discover $400K worth of drugs in Mississippi

A Jackson woman is facing many charges after deputies uncovered nearly $400,000 in illegal substances during a traffic check near the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.

According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were conducting a roadside safety checkpoint on Highway 468 near the penitentiary soon after 1 a.m. Sunday when they came across a car driven by Rachel Marie Thomas.

According to investigators, after conversing with Thomas, deputies obtained probable cause to search the vehicle for narcotics.

The search allegedly turned up several pounds of marijuana, many doses of THC wax, methamphetamine, suspected liquid fentanyl, and oxycodone. Deputies also discovered several telephones, a considerable amount of drug paraphernalia, two large bottles of promethazine, and alcohol-filled water bottles.

According to authorities, Thomas was headed to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility with the goal of introducing the items into the prison system.

Thomas has been charged with trafficking, possession of prohibited narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She is being jailed at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center with a $1.1 million bond.

The investigation is underway.
