A sheriff’s officer from Hillsborough County was taken into custody in Hialeah on Tuesday after a warrant was issued accusing him of sexually abusing a juvenile. Manuel Chaveco Delgado, 42, is a deputy assigned to the sheriff’s Detention Services section, according to the arrest paperwork. The warrant includes allegations of presenting obscene material to a youngster and lewd and lascivious abuse of a kid aged 12 to 16.
According to WTSP, Hialeah police received the warrant and arrested Delgado on Tuesday. He was booked into Miami-Dade County Jail, which also provided the booking photo used in the report.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office defines “detention services” as the division in charge of the county’s jail operations. According to public sources, Delgado was assigned to the unit. The sheriff’s office website describes numerous jail and court activities under Detention Services; however, individual personnel files are not available on the public website.
The warrant charges Delgado of lewd and lascivious molestation, as defined in Florida Statute 800.04, as well as exhibiting obscene material to a juvenile under Florida Statute 847.0133. Under similar statutes, lewd or lascivious molestation of a 12- to 16-year-old is a felony, as is exhibiting obscene material to a minor. Second- and third-degree offenses are punishable by prison time under state law.
Delgado remains in detention following the Hialeah arrest, and prosecutors are likely to review the evidence before making a final charging decision and arraignment. Officials from the Hialeah Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office have not provided any additional information beyond the warrant and booking information reported by WTSP.
