4 dead after house fire likely sparked by fireworks, fire officials say

Officials believe fireworks caused a house fire that killed four people.

A house fire in West Virginia killed four people, and investigators believe improperly discarded fireworks likely caused it, according to WCHS.

Crews received a report of the fire just before 10:45 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 300 block of West River Avenue in the Junior area of Barbour County, WCHS reported, citing the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.

When firefighters arrived, they found four adults — two men and two women — unresponsive inside the home, according to WCHS. Crews attempted to revive the victims but could not save them.

The victims were identified only by age, WCHS reported:

  • A 61-year-old man
  • A 27-year-old man
  • A 26-year-old woman
  • A 23-year-old woman

Investigators believe the fire started near the home’s front porch, where they found remnants of consumer-grade fireworks, according to WCHS.

The investigation found the occupants had used the fireworks before the fire and appeared to have discarded the spent materials in a trash bag with other garbage, which likely ignited the blaze, WCHS reported.
