Two Colombian nationals were apprehended in California after computerized license plate readers alerted investigators to a stolen Mercedes-Benz linked to a brutal carjacking days before, officials said.
A 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 was reported stolen during a violent carjacking and assault with a lethal weapon in Hawthorne, California, on July 11, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release.
Days later, deputies received an alert from an automated license plate reader indicating that the vehicle was driving through Rolling Hills Estates. As deputies searched for the vehicle, they discovered it was also tied to a previous domestic burglary in Torrance, authorities said.
Deputies located the Mercedes and executed a traffic stop near Palos Verdes Drive North and Rolling Vista Drive.
As the vehicle came to a stop, a passenger jumped out and fled, causing deputies to set up a perimeter, according to the sheriff’s department.
The driver, Yareht Pedraza, 26, from Bogotá, Colombian authorities apprehended him on the spot.With deputies protecting the perimeter and a LASD airship overhead, the hunt moved fast from the streets to the skies. The passenger was quickly apprehended and detained, according to the sheriff’s department.
The passenger, Alan Pena Sabogn, 21, of Bogotá, was seized and arrested on charges of failing to respect a lawful order, hindering a peace officer, and providing fake identification, according to authorities.
According to officials, Sabogn had an outstanding felony no-bail burglary warrant from Colorado.This arrest is again another example of how technology, proactive policing, and collaboration among deputies, dispatchers, and Air Support can quickly locate and remove offenders from our communities,” the sheriff’s department stated.
