1 Dead And 1 Apprehended After Gun Sale Turns Violent Inside St. Petersburg YMCA Bathroom

An 18-year-old man died and another was apprehended Wednesday afternoon after a shooting inside a bathroom at the Childs Park YMCA in St. Petersburg.

At around 2:09 p.m., officers responded to a call about a person being shot at the facility, which is located at 691 43rd St. South. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered an 18-year-old male victim with gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital and eventually died of his injuries. The victim’s identity has not been published by authorities pending notification of their family.

According to authorities, the victim and another 18-year-old man came from Clearwater to St. Petersburg with the aim of buying a gun.

Inside the YMCA, the pair met My’Kiese Johnson, 18, of St. Petersburg, and an unidentified man. Investigators say the group walked into a facility toilet to finish the deal when an altercation erupted, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

Johnson got a small gunshot wound to the face during the incident and went to the hospital on his own.

Johnson was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted felony murder. The investigation is underway.
