Detectives are investigating an overnight mass shooting in Chicago’s Humboldt Park area that injured six people, including two men who were badly hurt.
Police were dispatched to the 900-block of North Central Park Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday.
Callers reported many victims and dozens of rounds fired, as per police dispatch traffic.
“Shots fired in the 900 block of North Central Park…. The caller reports 30 bullets were fired… The caller reports a man neighbor was shot on the porch… “A male and a female were shot following a drive-by shooting,” a dispatcher stated.
As authorities reacted, further victims were reported.”We’re getting another call about a person shot at 918 North Central. According to dispatch traffic, a caller reports a person shot on the ground.
The victim arrived at the hospital on their own.We received a walk-in shot at Humboldt Park Health… The victim claims he was shot at Central Park and Augusta,” a dispatcher stated.
Neighbors reported a peaceful block party with around 100 attendees last night.They were sitting in their automobiles, simply playing music. It was, as I mentioned, midsummer in Chicago, so it didn’t appear to be a problem. But, again, that part is always present,” he explained.
Police claimed at least six people were injured:
- A 35-year-old man was shot multiple times and transported to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
- A 33-year-old man was shot in the finger and transported to Humboldt Park Health, where he was listed in good condition.
- A 39-year-old man was shot in the thigh and transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
- A 46-year-old woman was shot in the back and foot and transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.
- A 34-year-old woman was shot in the hip and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition.
- A 36-year-old man was shot multiple times and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Following the shooting, Habilitative Systems Inc. (HSI) is providing mental health care to victims and community members.It’s critical that it happens quickly because we know individuals are affected right away, and we don’t want them to be in a crisis condition,” said Chaundra VanDyk, HSI’s program director of special initiatives.
According to VanDyk, occurrences such as the shooting can have long-term emotional impacts on inhabitants.This may re-traumatize some people and bring up memories of prior experiences, or it may produce new, negative experiences in the present. So, we want to assist folks work through some of their unhealed pain while also mending what happened in the present,” she explained.
The investigation is underway. According to Chicago police, there is currently no public information available concerning what happened or who may have been responsible.
