A Waukegan man was sentenced to more than six years in prison for forcibly carjacking a Chicago woman during a Facebook Marketplace transaction to sell her vehicle. According to court records, Fonocerio Edwards, 22, pled guilty to vehicular hijacking and received a 6½-year sentence from Judge Timothy Joyce.
Prosecutors claim Edwards conspired with a 16-year-old girl in the December 23, 2024 carjacking. According to authorities, a 38-year-old woman was attempting to sell her blue 2011 Chevrolet Traverse on Facebook Marketplace when she agreed to meet Edwards in the 2800 block of West 63rd Street to check the vehicle.
However, the interaction rapidly became violent when Edwards shoved the woman out of the driver’s seat and took the wheel, according to authorities. The woman retrieved the keys from the ignition and delivered them to a 32-year-old male who had accompanied her to the meeting. Edwards then smacked the man in the head with an item, causing a wound and “copious blood,” according to authorities.
In the days following the hijacking, but before authorities connected Edwards to the crime, Chicago police came across the stolen vehicle. According to a CPD investigation, body-worn camera footage from the incident shows Edwards driving the Chevy.
Edwards obtained 685 days credit for time spent in the Cook County Jail awaiting trial. With the customary 50% sentence reduction applied to his prison term, he will have approximately 500 days left to serve.
Because the 16-year-old female who allegedly assisted Edwards was a minor at the time, little information is available. According to the CPD, she was also charged with vehicular hijacking.
