A Maumee man has been sent to prison for 36 years after pleading guilty to seven felonies involving sex crimes with two minors, the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Kevin Richey, 35, of the 1300 block of Junior Drive, pled guilty on August 25 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to six charges of first-degree rape and one count of second-degree pandering obscenity involving a minor.
On Wednesday, Judge Gary Cook sentenced Richey to the maximum punishment of ten years for one of the rape counts. Three further rape counts and a third-degree offense of tampering with evidence were dismissed at the sentence.
Maumee police and Lucas County Children Services launched an investigation after one of the two victims told her mother that Richey sexually attacked her, according to the prosecutor’s office. That inquiry turned up violations committed by her and a second victim between December 2021 and March.
Richey’s convictions designate him as an Ohio Tier III sex offender, and he must register for life with in-person verification every 90 days.
“There are no excuses and no justifications for sexually abusing a child,” said county prosecutor Julia Bates. “The defendant frequently preyed on two teenage victims, and now he will serve decades in prison for it. I hope that this sentence delivers some justice for these victims and their families as they move forward.
Mrs. Bates’ case was led by Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Effler of the Special Victims Unit.
If Richey misbehaves while confined, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections may sentence him to up to five more years in prison.
