Thirty-eight people were taken into custody around Los Angeles over the weekend as local law enforcement cracked down on illegal street takeovers and dangerous driving.
From September 25 to September 27, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Street Takeover Task Force stopped hazardous events in Compton, Carson, and Century City. During the operation, authorities issued 127 fines, towed 25 vehicles, and seized two weapons. LASD described the crackdown as a “significant increase in enforcement activity and accountability.”
The operation focused on illegal street takeovers, street racing, irresponsible driving, and other types of unsafe driving that endanger public safety. The busts included street racing in Carson and a street takeover in Compton attended by almost 200 people.
“Illegal street takeovers and street racing are not harmless gatherings,” LASD stated. “Drivers performing unsafe maneuvers at high speeds can swiftly lose control of their vehicles, putting spectators, pedestrians, other drivers, and adjacent residents in grave danger of injury or death. These takeovers can also obstruct intersections and streets, hamper emergency response, destroy public and private property, and create hazardous circumstances in nearby neighborhoods. The presence of weapons in some instances heightens the danger of violence and serious harm.
LASD encourages the public to report street takeovers, street racing, and other types of reckless driving to their local law enforcement department. The
“If you encounter a street takeover, remain at a safe distance, avoid the area whenever possible, and contact law enforcement,” LASD stated.
