A woman was apprehended for taking her child from a family member in Florida.
According to local law enforcement, 33-year-old Amanda Lynn Burkes was arrested after stealing one of her children from the house of a family member who had been placed in court care. Burkes was not permitted to have unsupervised contact with the child and did not have custody due to an existing safety plan.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Burkes broke into a home on Ranchette Trail in Palatka and stole the child. Deputies were summoned at 3:19 a.m. by the child’s biological grandmother, who discovered the rear door of the residence was unsecured and the child was no longer present.
The Sheriff’s Office responded extensively. Local detectives did place a reverse 911 call to neighbors in the neighborhood.
Burkes was apprehended after approaching another youngster at a bus stop near Comer Road and Bardin Road and using the girl’s phone to call a friend to pick her up, according to police. Burkes fled to a neighboring church after using their cellphones. When deputies arrived at Oakhill Baptist Church, they discovered that the building was unlocked. During a check of the building, they discovered Burkes and the child hiding in a toilet.
“To say we were relieved to safely recover this child is an understatement,” Sheriff H.D. ‘Gator’ DeLoach stated. “A mother is someone who ensures their child is safe, protected, fed, and loved, and while Ms. Burkes may profess love, she does not understand the concept by continually endangering her children.”
Burkes was searched before her arrest, and deputies discovered THC wax and e-cigarettes with THC liquid, according to law officials.
She was detained and charged with interfering with the custody of a minor, burglary of an occupied residence, drug possession, and drug paraphernalia. She was brought to Putnam County Jail.
Burkes was arrested at another church on Bardin Road in May after being discovered asleep in the parking lot with her three tiny children in the back seat. She was detained at the time for trafficking amphetamines and neglecting children on three occasions.
