New York and New Jersey may see another shot of wintry weather this week as a coastal storm slides by the region Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The city already saw its first flakes on November 11, when chilly air brought light snow to sections of New York City.

This time, the storm might deliver rain, a rain-snow mix, or a brief wet snow, while locations just north of the city could receive several inches.

According to the National Weather Service, a developing coastal system is likely to pass south and east of New York City on Tuesday, perhaps bringing the first substantial snow of the season to areas of the tri-state.

Forecasters predict that the event will be mostly rain for New York City and the coast, but some early-morning snow or a coating is possible.

Higher totals are forecast further north:

  • 3 to 5 inches possible in Orange, Putnam and western Passaic counties.
  • A few tenths to 2 inches across most of Connecticut, New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley.
  • Little to no accumulation along the immediate coast, including NYC.

The NWS snowfall map indicates a strong gradient: heavy snow northwest of the city, then fast decreasing off near Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Forecasters said the storm’s exact path is still unknown, which will determine whether NYC experiences merely rain or more wintry weather.

  • A slightly closer track could push advisory-level totals (3″ to 5″) farther south toward NYC and coastal Connecticut.
  • A warmer track would mean all rain for the city.
  • An offshore track would keep the heavier snow away from most of the region.

The NWS refers to this as a “reasonable worst-case scenario” rather than a “warmer solution.”

Winter weather warnings may be issued when confidence grows. The NWS plans to deliver an updated forecast briefing by 5 p.m. Sunday, or earlier if necessary.

For the time being, New Yorkers should expect rain with a chance of wet snow, but commuters north of the city may see greater accumulation.
