Three men are facing charges in the heist of a moving freight train after a railroad drone spotted them in the act, according to authorities.
According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, officers involved in a joint operation to suppress cargo theft with Norfolk Southern Railroad were told about 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 19 that the railroad’s drone detected two people on top of a moving train near 60th Place and Stewart Avenue in Chicago.
The drone’s video also showed two men breaking into a shipping container, throwing “numerous packages” to the ground before jumping offstopped and fleeing into an alley.
Responding cops discovered Shaun Smythe, 25, and Marcus Moore, 26, on the 300 block of West 60th Place and arrested them. Spotted on the rails, a third suspect fled in a Chrysler minivan. Officers pursued the vehicle until it came to a stop near the 100 block of West 87th Street, where they apprehended the driver, 44-year-old Errol Miller.
The three males were charged with criminal burglary. Miller was additionally charged with aggravated evading and eluding. According to the sheriff’s office, Miller and Moore were on pre-trial parole for burglary charges when they were arrested. Smythe was freed from detention on December 20 after his first court appearance. Moore and Miller were also ordered released on the most recent charges, although they remain in detention at Cook County Jail for breaking their pre-trial release conditions.
