Hazardous driving conditions are predicted to develop east of Chicago beginning Wednesday as lake-effect snow develops across parts of northern Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan, with effects likely felt during the Wednesday night and Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, significant wind-driven lake-effect snow is forecast from Wednesday to early Thursday, particularly in Porter County, Indiana, and neighboring locations east of the city. Strong northwest winds will combine with accumulating snow to drastically impair visibility and cause blowing and drifting, making travel hazardous in the most affected locations.
While the most snow is forecast east of the Illinois state line, areas of the Chicago metro region may still see travel delays, particularly along routes connecting to northwest Indiana. Porter County, including locations near Valparaiso and the Indiana Dunes, could get several inches of snow, resulting in major drifting and hazardous road conditions. Lighter, but still dramatic, snowfall is possible in northeastern Lake County, Indiana, and Jasper County at times.
Drivers driving along major routes such as Interstate 90, Interstate 80, and U.S. 20 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, as visibility can plummet from clear to near zero in minutes under strong snow bands. Officials advise motorists to give extra time, minimize speed, and postpone non-essential travel, especially late Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Winds blasting out of the northwest will significantly lower wind chills, increasing the danger for anyone trapped or working outside. Even a brief exposure under whiteout conditions might be harmful.
Snow is forecast to melt later Thursday morning, although icy patches may last throughout the afternoon. As confidence grows, additional updates or advisories may be issued. Residents and visitors are advised to constantly monitor forecasts and plan ahead of time when this lake-effect configuration develops near the Chicago area.
