A Miami man is facing 26 felony charges after detectives say he stole almost $60,000 in Garmin GPS systems from boats during a month-long burglary spree that spanned Stuart to Hobe Sound.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday the arrest of 29-year-old Robert Esposito after a month-long investigation into a string of vessel burglaries recorded in July.
According to investigators, Esposito targeted boats throughout Martin County, stealing marine electronics from numerous boat owners. According to detectives, the crimes totaled around $60,000 in stolen Garmin GPS equipment.
Esposito was accused by authorities in May of stealing six Garmin GPS devices from four boats at Legacy Marine in Stuart.
Several days later, officials claim he took another GPS from Royal Palm Boats in Stuart.
Investigators said Esposito meticulously organized a series of GPS thefts, studying areas before committing the offenses.
Authorities say surveillance video recorded a dark Chevrolet Traverse parked near targeted locations before and during several crimes. Detectives linked the vehicle back to Esposito, and they believe social media posts helped them build their case.
According to arrest records, investigators compared Esposito’s appearance, attire, and travel activity on social media to evidence gathered throughout the investigation.
Authorities believe the theft spree went beyond the Treasure Coast. Similar GPS thefts have been reported in the Fort Myers area, and investigators are looking into any connections between the cases.
Esposito has been charged with ten charges of grand theft, eight counts of burglary to a vessel, and eight counts of crossing county lines to commit a burglary, according to the sheriff’s office.
As the investigation continues, authorities intend to file additional charges.
Esposito is currently being held in Miami under a $540,000 bond.
