A man fatally shot his girlfriend and two children before taking his own life at a home in Plainville on Friday, police said.
Authorities said a woman called dispatchers shortly before 4 p.m., reporting that her brother had contacted her and claimed he had killed his girlfriend and their 4-year-old daughter and intended to kill himself.
Officers responded to the home on Milford Street, surrounded the property, and attempted to make contact with the homeowner, 27-year-old Patrick King.
A negotiator eventually reached King by phone.
After two hours of negotiations, police decided to deploy pepper gas in an effort to get King to surrender, according to Chief Christopher Vanghele.
At that point, King shot himself, Vanghele said.
Officers then entered the home and began life-saving efforts on King before transporting him to the hospital, where he later died.
Once inside the home, officers discovered the bodies of King’s girlfriend, 31-year-old Felisha Matthews, along with their 4-year-old daughter, Ava King, and 12-year-old Mileena Matthews. Police said Mileena was Felisha Matthews’ daughter from a previous relationship.
All three victims had been fatally shot.
“This is a very dark day for the Town of Plainville, and for Connecticut,” Vanghele said Saturday morning. “Our hearts are broken for the senseless loss.”
Mileena Matthews attended the local middle school, and police have contacted school officials, Vanghele said. He added that support services will be available at Plainville Middle School.
According to Vanghele, officers removed several firearms from the home, and the weapon used in the incident was legally registered to King.
“The loss of life is deeply painful for this close-knit community, and we stand together in sorrow and compassion for all affected,” said Christopher Wazorko, (D) Plainville town council chair.
Police said the family had recently moved into the neighborhood.
“They seemed like just normal people. Like the little girl was always happy and running down the sidewalk to go to school,” neighbor Tim Sunderland said.
Investigators believe Patrick King held a permit to carry and used a legally registered firearm.
Authorities are now reviewing evidence from the home to determine what led up to the shooting.
