The Columbus Aviators’ head coach, a former Buckeyes receiver, will miss Sunday’s game due to his arrest.
According to the Euless, Texas Police Department, Aviators coach Ted Ginn Jr. was arrested at 12:58 a.m. on Saturday for allegedly driving while intoxicated.
Ginn was taken to Tarrant County Jail. As of Sunday morning, he was not listed online as an inmate. The first-year head coach turns 41 on Sunday.
Ginn is a Cleveland native and a former Ohio State receiver from 2004-2006. After a stellar Buckeyes career, Ginn played in the NFL from 2007 to 2020, appearing in over 200 games.
Ginn published a statement on Sunday afternoon, admitting that he committed a “serious mistake” and accepting “full responsibility” for his conduct. “I’m committed to learning from this, making better decisions, and earning back the trust of my players, our organization, and the fans,” Ginn said. “My focus now is on taking the necessary steps to grow from this and represent the Columbus Aviators and this community the right way.”
According to a statement from Russ Brandon, president and CEO of the United Football League, offensive coordinator Todd Haley will coach the Aviators in their game against the Dallas Renegades on Sunday in Frisco, Texas.
Haley previously served as the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach from 2009 to 2011, as well as the Cleveland Browns’ and Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive coordinator.
This is the Aviators’ inaugural season in the United Football League. The team has begun the season 0-2.
