A man who randomly and severely attacked a 4-year-old boy at the Belmont Brown Line station in Lakeview in 2021 is now sentenced to 24 years in prison for another random attack: the brutal beating of two staff and a 77-year-old patron at a Chicago Public Library branch.
Calvin Williams, 28, pleaded guilty to two charges of attempted murder and one count of aggravated violence in a public place in return for a sentence from Judge Timothy Joyce, according to court documents.
Williams was arrested in February 2021 for arbitrarily kicking a 4-year-old youngster in the face on a Brown Line train in Belmont. The boy’s mother slapped Williams on the shoulder and continued to attack him until police arrived to separate them and arrest Williams. He eventually pleaded guilty to aggravated violence against a kid and received a four-year sentence.
Then, on May 6, 2024, Williams randomly attacked two Chicago Public Library employees and a 77-year-old patron with a metal bookend at the Martin Luther King Branch, 3436 South King Drive. Prosecutors stated that two of the victims had skull fractures.
Williams initially attacked a 52-year-old woman, striking her in the face, head, and body with the metal bookend, resulting in a large cut on the top of her skull. Prosecutors said the woman, who was classified as a library clerk in a city personnel database, sustained a skull fracture, a fractured hand, and a broken jaw.
According to authorities, Williams then focused his attention on a 77-year-old man who was attending the library. He hit the man with the bookend and smacked him in the face, knocking out a tooth. Prosecutors claimed the victim suffered a serious cut on his skull and a laceration on his hand.
Finally, Williams assaulted a 51-year-old lady listed as a librarian on city payroll records. He repeatedly hit her in the face, bruising her jaw and chipping two of her teeth before fleeing the scene, according to prosecutors.
The first Chicago police officers to arrive reported discovering three “severely injured” victims in the library, all of whom were sent to hospitals. They radioed a description of the suspect, and additional police apprehended Williams in the 3600 block of South Indiana when witnesses confirmed his identity, according to a CPD report.
Judge Joyce sentenced Williams to successive 12-year terms for attempted murder, with a judgment of grievous bodily injury inflicted. He included three consecutive years on the aggravated battery count. Williams must serve 85% of his sentence, with an expected parole date of September 2044.
His previous criminal convictions include obstruction of justice, two burglaries, robbery, and a 2015 hate crime.
