Mexican who overstayed VISA apprehended on Florida Turnpike in Lake County

A Tavares man was taken into custody after a check of his immigration status revealed that he showed a trooper a false ID.

A trooper arrived at a traffic stop at Mile Marker 294 on the Florida Turnpike in Groveland around 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Following an immigration check, all four occupants, including 27-year-old Julio Perez Hernandez, were detained.

When law officials inquired for identification, Perez Hernandez displayed an image of a permanent resident card. The varied layers of text and faded photos suggested fraud, according to the investigation.

A check with a US Border Patrol agent revealed that he had no legal status in the United States and was classified as a visa overstay with an April 21, 2020, departure date. Furthermore, the study uncovered no applications or actions that would have led to him receiving a permanent residence card.

Instead, the officer discovered an open warrant for his arrest out of Marion County for a probation violation on August 7, 2025, according to the report.

Perez Hernandez was arrested for fraud (possessing a similitude ID card). The Mexican native was booked into the Lake County Jail, where his bond was set at $2,500 and an active arrest warrant was put on him.
