Villager apprehended after pursuing ex-husband at pickleball courts

A villager was apprehended for reportedly pursuing her ex-husband on the pickleball courts at a recreation center.

Bonnie Burgess, 74, of the Village of El Cortez, was detained on Sunday after showing up to the La Hacienda Recreation Center’s pickleball courts, according to a Lady Lake Police Department report.

The report stated that her ex-husband works for the Recreation Department, where he checks IDs. In February, he secured a court order requiring her to remain 100 yards away from his workplace.

He contacted the cops when his ex-wife showed up at the pickleball courts. When police got on the scene, the ex-husband pointed out Burgess.

The New York native dashed out the north gate of the pickleball courts. She abandoned her golf cart, which contained her phone and other personal items. A police officer started running after Burgess, who “continued walking away.” Officers called her name, and she eventually halted and was detained.

Burgess confirmed to authorities that she was aware her ex-husband worked at the La Hacienda pickleball courts but stated, “He does not normally work on Sundays.” She stated that she “had no intention of harm” and “did not understand why she could not come play pickleball,” according to the report.

Burgess also works for the recreation department. She advanced from recreation assistant to recreation leader in 2023.

She was detained on a misdemeanor charge of breaking an injunction. She was booked into Lake County Jail and released on her own recognizance.
