Kansas City man sentenced after ‘hardworking employees’ targeted in attempted robbery

A Clay County man will serve eight years in prison for attempting to rob restaurant employees in an attempted armed robbery.

According to Clay County Prosecutor Zach Thompson, Isaiah D. Dotson was sentenced after being convicted in connection with an attempted robbery in which Kansas City police reacted.

Thompson points out that Dotson is the second and final defendant sentenced in the case. His co-defendant got a 15-year sentence. That individual has not been officially identified.

The Kansas City Police Department says it responded to a report of an attempted armed robbery aimed at restaurant employees who were leaving work.

Investigators said they seized a blue pistol used by Dotson during the incident. After fleeing the scene, a K-9 unit traced and apprehended him.

According to Thompson, Dotson was convicted under Missouri’s accomplice culpability legislation, which states that when two or more persons commit a crime together, one person can be held criminally accountable for the crimes of the other.

Under Missouri law, a person can be held liable for the actions of another if he or she purposefully promotes the commission of an offense by assisting in the planning, committing, or attempting to commit the offense.

“These were dedicated restaurant employees just concluding their shift; they deserved to return home safely, not be targeted for violence. Thompson says, “We hope that this sentence brings closure to all those who were affected by this crime.”
