5th juvenile taken into custody in ‘Lakeview Goons’ mob attack, more expected

Chicago police arrested a fifth juvenile on Friday in connection with the mob attack and robbery tied to a group of Ald. Scott Waguespack has called the “Lakeview Goons,” bringing the total number of juveniles charged to five, with additional arrests expected. Officers took the 15-year-old boy arrested at his private high school in the Roscoe Village neighborhood, according to two sources.

On April 4, about 8:45 p.m., a 19-year-old man heading home from work at a Roscoe Village pizzeria was cornered, beaten, and robbed by a group of high school-aged boys on the 3500 block of North Hoyne Avenue. He was almost home when the group approached him, and despite his attempts to protect himself, the boys allegedly fled with his cash, phone, and keys. Waguespack called it a “brutal attack.”

Chicago police stated the assault featured “at least” ten assailants and was seen on various surveillance cameras. Waguespack stated that the heist was the “main topic” of a recent community policing meeting and that the group could be linked to other similar instances reported in the region in recent years.

Waguespack informed constituents via email that two of the teenagers had recently turned themselves in to face robbery and serious assault charges. A 16-year-old boy was caught by a witness and arrested by police shortly after the April 4 attack, while a fourth suspect was charged last month. None of the juveniles, the rest of whom are 15, had been arrested before, the alderman said.

Because all of the accused are minors, the public is not permitted to attend their court hearings, according to Waguespack; nevertheless, a community letter of support for the victim may be sent. A resident who attended the recent community meeting said they came away with the impression that Chicago police expect to make more arrests in the case.
