Mexican man, previously deported 5 times, apprehended in Illinois

A Mexican national with a lengthy criminal record has been sentenced to a year in prison for illegally reentering the United States after previously being deported five times.

According to the US Department of Justice, Manuel Alberto Cortes Cuan, 38, was detained in Lyons, Illinois, on June 17, 2025, as part of a theft investigation.

According to authorities, when police approached Cortes Cuan’s vehicle, he “vigorously resisted arrest,” hurting himself and two officers.

Cortes Cuan had past felony convictions in the United States, including theft, escape, trespassing, aggravated assault, and aggravated DUI. Each of his five deportations had occurred following a conviction.

He pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry following removal in April 2026. He was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison on June 3. According to the DOJ, Cortes Cuan faces deportation again as a result of his conviction.
