Police: 3 people taken into custody, including teen, during street takeover events in NE Portland

Three people were taken into custody after officers reacted to various street takeovers on Tuesday night, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

The first street takeover occurred in the vicinity of North-east Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and North-east Ainsworth Street. Police reported that some were driving carelessly.

Officers halted one car and arrested the driver, Moises Lucero, who was 21 years old. Lucero was arrested for driving recklessly and endangering others. His car was also towed.

Officers responded to a second street takeover shortly after, near North-east 13th Avenue and North-east Lloyd Boulevard. One driver, 21-year-old Henock Mekuria, was arrested and charged with reckless driving and endangerment. Police said they discovered a handgun inside Mekuria’s car, which was towed.

Less than an hour later, a third street takeover was discovered in the 3900 block of North-east Marine Drive. One automobile, driven by a 17-year-old, was stopped. According to police, the youngster was cited, and the car was towed.

“Street takeovers are incredibly dangerous and put participants, spectators and innocent community members at risk,” Bob Day said. “I’m proud of the work our officers did to quickly address these events, make arrests and seize vehicles involved in this reckless behaviour.”
