Minneapolis father, son indicted in multimillion-dollar tax fraud scheme

A Minneapolis father and son have been charged with conducting a multimillion-dollar tax fraud scheme, according to court documents released this month.

LaMar Javis Burgess, 44, and his 23-year-old son, LaMar Dazjar Burgess, reportedly plotted to file fake federal income tax returns from 2022 to 2024.

According to investigators, LaMar Javis Burgess used instructional manuals to learn how to create fraudulent returns, including phony claims for COVID-19 sick and family leave credits.

Furthermore, the duo allegedly collected personal information from other taxpayers, charged them a percentage of the bogus refunds as a fee, and filed returns claiming millions of dollars they were not entitled to.

Both individuals are charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States and six counts of filing false claims, and the conspiracy charge alone carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.

LaMar Javis Burgess, who has many past criminal convictions, faces an additional 15 years in prison after being found in possession of a firearm and being kept in federal custody pending trial.
