A cartel-connected Texas border county official who had been on the run since 2013 was apprehended in Mexico and is scheduled to return to Texas this week. He will face state child sexual abuse charges.
Mexican officials apprehended Omar Guerrero this week in the seaside tourist town of Tulum, Quintana Roo, after nearly 13 years on the run. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that the arrest was made with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service.
Guerrero served as the Hidalgo County District Clerk from 2004 to 2006, but he was defeated for re-election after being jailed on drug charges and fleeing for two months before being apprehended in Mexico.
Then, in 2013, officials detained him on drug and illegal weapons possession accusations. At the time, a judge placed Guerrero’s bond at more than $1 million. Guerrero had previously fled to Mexico; therefore, the case caused great local debate. He was released shortly after posting bond, and the case moved forward. Then, officials launched an inquiry into the sexual abuse of an underage teen who had been led to Guerrero’s residence in Mission. As police investigated the case, Guerrero traveled into the border city of Reynosa, where he disappeared and spent 13 years on the run before being apprehended.
Several law enforcement officials told Breitbart Texas at the time that Guerrero allegedly had connections to Gulf Cartel figures in Reynosa. During his time on the run, police authorities received reports that Guerrero had been seen in Reynosa, Monterrey, and, most recently, the Mexican Caribbean resort area, where he was eventually apprehended.
The former congressman is set to arrive in Hidalgo County this week to face both the elder and sexual abuse charges.
