18-year-old found dead in Toledo pond identified as St. Francis de Sales HS student

Child reported missing found dead in Lake Erie, Cleveland fire department says

TOLEDO, Ohio — Police found an 18-year-old dead after an apparent drowning in a north Toledo pond on Saturday night.

On Sunday, St. Francis de Sales High School confirmed to WTOL 11 that the young man was Anson Crandall, who would have been a senior next year.

Crandall’s mother called police around 9 p.m. to report the man missing after he went fishing at a pond on Cleveland Street behind the Toledo Correctional Institute sometime earlier in the day.

Toledo Fire and Rescue crews located Crandall’s body shortly after they arrived, submerged in the pond.

He was pronounced dead at 9:43 p.m.

In a social media post, St. Francis said it will hold a prayer service at Gesu Catholic Church on Parkwood Boulevard on Monday for all members of the St. Francis community.

In addition, grief counselors will be available for students at Gesu at 6 p.m. or by appointment if necessary.

In a letter to faculty and staff that St. Francis shared with WTOL 11, the school described Anson as a talented visual artist.

Police detectives and the coroner also responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
