A South Carolina family is grieving the loss of a young woman and her unborn child following a tragic go-kart accident.
According to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker, 24-year-old Baylee Johnson suffered injuries on Aug. 23 after her hair became caught in a go-kart sprocket.
Johnson was taken to the hospital for treatment, but she ultimately died from her injuries on Aug. 31.
The 24-year-old’s family said she was 15 weeks pregnant at the time of the accident. She and her boyfriend had recently learned they were expecting a baby boy, whom they planned to name Johnny.
Johnson’s family said she had also recently landed her dream job as a medical assistant at Prisma Health OB/GYN–Sumter.
Loved ones shared a message Johnson received from country music star Riley Green after she was initially hospitalized.
According to her obituary, a visitation for Johnson is scheduled for Friday night at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home in Sumter, followed by a celebration of life on Saturday.
“Caring for others came naturally to Baylee—but so did making them laugh. And if there is one thing everyone who knew Baylee could agree on, it is that she was funny,” her obituary read. “Baylee was silly, spontaneous and completely carefree. She did not simply walk into a room; she brought life into it.”
The family is also asking for memorial donations in honor of Baylee and Johnny through the McLeod Health Foundation.
