A woman reported missing from Ohio was discovered dead on top of a train car in Indiana, authorities said.
Brittany Ritter was found dead in Elkhart, Indiana, according to a Facebook post by Ohio’s Lucas County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, the Elkhart Police Department in Indiana announced they have identified the remains of a 37-year-old woman from Holland, Ohio, whose body was discovered on top of a stopped rail car on September 3. According to Elkhart police, the train left from the east and went west before stopping in Elkhart at the train yard on West Lusher Avenue.
Elkhart police said Ritter died after a Norfolk Southern employee discovered a person on top of a halted rail car around noon on September 3.
It wasn’t immediately clear how she died. Elkhart police stated the homicide section handed over the case to the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office. Her autopsy was conducted on Thursday. According to the sheriff’s office, Ritter was last seen in the Holland region late on September 1 and early on September 2. The sheriff’s office speculated that she may have been riding a bicycle.
