A 17-year-old girl is charged with shooting another 17-year-old girl during a massive street gathering in East Garfield Park over the Independence Day weekend, one of seven individuals injured in shootings on the same block, Chicago police said.
The victim was shot in the chest around 1:25 a.m. in the 3800 block of West Maypole Avenue.
She was standing outside when the other girl opened fire, according to CPD.
Officers were already on the site, supervising the enormous crowd, and arrived quickly to assist the victim. They applied a chest wound-specific dressing and transported her out of the mob so that an ambulance could reach her. She was sent to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The shooter escaped.
Less than ten minutes later, while cops were still assisting the first victim, multiple shooters opened fire on the same street, injuring six additional individuals, according to CPD. Some victims received treatment on the scene, while others were transferred to hospitals.
On Thursday, the CPD issued attempted murder charges against the shooter, who was 17 years old. The department did not identify her because she is a minor. There have been no charges announced in connection with the remaining six shootings that night.
