A woman was shot and killed inside a Walmart in Hammond, Indiana, where she worked early Monday morning.
At 9:09 a.m., Hammond police stated officers were dispatched to the Walmart Supercenter at 1100 5th Ave., just across the Indiana state line from Chicago.
According to police, a man was talking with a Walmart employee in an aisle when the confrontation became aggressive. According to authorities, the man used a gun to repeatedly shoot the victim.
‘The female was a worker here. The male suspect approached her. They got into a physical argument at some point, and he pulled out a gun and shot her many times,” Hammond Police Capt. Steve Kellogg said.
Police stated the victim was in her mid-20s, and they suspect the shooter is 18 years old. The victim’s name has not been released.
According to authorities, an off-duty officer working private security at the store responded promptly after the incident. “The guy proceeded a few aisles over, sat down on the ground, and waited for police, who arrived and took him into jail,” Kellogg said. “It appears they know each other. They had a long talk before anything happens.”
The gunshot left no customers harmed, and authorities think no customers were present in the aisle where the shooting occurred. Another employee who was in the aisle at the time was unhurt.
Investigators believe the incident was isolated and posed no threat to the public.
Walmart issued a statement saying, “We’re heartbroken by what happened at our Hammond, IN, store. We’re cooperating with authorities as they continue their investigation.”
