Grand Junction, Colo. — Saturday started off serene in the Grand Valley, with crisp, clear skies and a hint of fall warmth. Don’t let the calm fool you, though—a shift arrives late Sunday as a Pacific system sweeps into western Colorado, delivering rain to lower elevations and the season’s early snow to the high country by early Monday.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction says a sturdy ridge of high pressure keeps Saturday mild and about five degrees warmer than normal, with afternoon temperatures topping out near 68°F. By Sunday afternoon, that ridge weakens as the next disturbance approaches from the west. Showers should blossom across the Central Colorado River Basin and along the I-70 corridor heading east toward Glenwood Springs. Above the timberline, accumulating snow is possible on the Elk and Gore Mountains, the Grand Mesa, and across the San Juans.
If you’re traveling east late Sunday through Monday morning, plan for winter-like conditions over the higher passes. Expect slick, snow-covered stretches and periods of reduced visibility above 9,000 feet. The Weather Service notes that northern and central mountain ranges have the best shot at measurable snowfall, with precipitation tapering off by late Monday as colder, drier air settles in.
Down in the valleys, temperatures ease back from the upper 60s on Sunday into the low 60s Monday. By Tuesday morning, sheltered spots could see a touch of frost. The middle of the week turns quiet again: sunny afternoons, chilly starts, and highs in the lower 60s—ideal for tidying up the yard or putting the finishing touches on Halloween decorations.
Winter’s edge is creeping closer, and November’s chill isn’t far off.
