A Hialeah man was detained on Tuesday, months after his wife overdosed on cocaine that he had supplied to her, authorities said.
According to an arrest record from the Hialeah Police Department, officers were summoned to the couple’s house in the 3500 block of West 89th Place just before 12:30 a.m. on May 28 in response to a report of an unresponsive female.
When authorities arrived, they contacted the victim’s husband, Rafael Lujan, 37, who spoke with them. His interactions with officers were removed from the publicly released report.
According to the complaint, Hialeah Fire Rescue workers took the victim to Palmetto General Hospital.
Police said they discovered a little plastic bag containing a white powdery substance at the couple’s house, which tested positive for cocaine.
When the victim arrived at the hospital, medics collected her blood, which tested positive for cocaine, according to prosecutors.
According to the report, the person died in the hospital on June 1.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office determined that her cause of death was acute combination drug poisoning from cocaine and ethanol.
According to the findings, Lujan provided his wife with the cocaine that caused her death.
Police charged him with first-degree murder and cocaine possession.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Lujan was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. According to online jail records, his bond is “to be set.”
