A Southern Idaho man has been sentenced to life in prison after committing a series of violent crimes against his family, including attempted murder and arson.

On October 8, 2025, District Judge Jonathan Brody sentenced Daniel Colon, 40, of Nampa, to life in prison with a minimum of 25 years before parole eligibility, following his July 2025 conviction on eleven felony and misdemeanor charges. The allegations included attempted murder, aggravated arson, and damage to a child.

According to the Canyon County Prosecutor’s Office, Colon’s crimes originated from a night of terror in which he strangled his wife, Tania Colon, before attempting to explode an explosive device in her car and set fire to their home as their five children slept inside.

During the sentencing hearing, Tania Colon addressed the court, detailing her years of abuse and the devastating repercussions for her family. “He has created the ideal disguise,” she continued. “He knows exactly what he is doing.” She encouraged the court to impose the maximum penalty, referring to her husband as a man who “would rather see individuals dead than happy.”

Deputy Prosecutor Tracy Stoff asked for a life sentence without parole, calling Colon’s acts “thoughtful and meticulous” and describing him as “a monster behind closed doors.” The defense asked for shorter, fixed terms, but Judge Brody emphasized the gravity of the offenses and the threat to the community, describing Colon’s behavior as a “classic, severe domestic violence pattern of thinking.”

Following the hearing, Canyon County Prosecutor Chris Boyd praised Ms. Colon’s bravery as well as the Nampa Police Department and Fire Department’s investigative work.

“Our community will not tolerate domestic violence,” Boyd said. “I hope this sentence sends a message that those who commit these horrific acts against their family members will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
