Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that claimed late Saturday night on Ajo Highway (Route 86) near the intersection with Old Ajo Way on Tucson’s west side.
Greg Van Alstine, Deputy Chief of the Santa Rita Fire District, verified that the collision occurred on the night of October 11, when two automobiles collided in a dramatic T-bone crash, causing significant damage.
One vehicle remained in the eastbound lanes, and a male victim was discovered dead on the site. The second vehicle crossed the median, went over the guardrail, and collided with a mesquite tree.
Drexel Heights firefighters, along with the Department of Public Safety (DPS), launched a helicopter to help with what Van Alstine described as a “lengthy extrication process.” When rescuers reached the second vehicle, they discovered two more victims dead inside.
Three persons were taken to Banner Medical Center, with two in stable condition and one in severe condition. The victims’ ages and names have not yet been disclosed.
Route 86 was closed in both ways overnight while emergency crews worked the site before reopening early Sunday morning.
This is a developing story, and we will make updates as more information becomes available.
