A father was arrested after a gun was discovered in his child’s backpack at a private daycare center on Monday, October 13, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

At 8:30 a.m., daycare personnel alerted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office after finding a weapon in a child’s backpack.

According to deputies, the child’s father placed the pistol in the bag earlier that morning in order to get it to his vehicle and failed to remove it before dropping the youngster off at daycare. Deputies claim the child did not intend to bring the pistol to the institution.

The father, Dylan Scott Whorley, 27, of Bedford, was charged with the following:

  • One felony count of Abuse/Neglect of a Child
  • One felony count of Firearm Possession on School Property
  • One misdemeanor count of Allowing Access to Firearms by Children
