Devastating tragedy: 9-year-old boy dies after vehicle strikes him in Green

GREEN, Ohio – The Summit County Sheriff’s Office and the Green Fire Department responded Friday afternoon to a report of a child being struck by a vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, a vehicle hit 9-year-old Samuel Rife around 4:30 p.m. on Peach Wood Way in Green.

A 2025 Jeep Wrangler was traveling along Peach Wood Way when Rife ran into the street and the vehicle struck him.

The Green Fire Department transported Rife to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“He was the most wonderful boy,” Samuel’s father Harlen Rife told 19 News. “I wish everyone could have met him. Those who did will never forget.”

The driver was identified as an 81-year-old Green man.

The sheriff’s office said speed and impairment did not play a role in the incident.

The Summit Metro Crash Response Team continues to investigate the crash, and officials will determine any charges after the investigation concludes.

Community members gathered to honor Rife’s short life and lasting legacy.
