Police: Suspect apprehended after man shot in head outside Sandbar sports bar in Miami Beach

A suspect has been apprehended after a man was shot in the back of the head Friday outside Miami Beach’s Sandbar sports bar, according to investigators.

According to an arrest report acquired Monday by Local 10 News, Quayshawn Akeem West, 41, of Miami Beach, was taken into custody on Friday on a second-degree murder charge.

Miami Beach police said the incident occurred soon before 5 a.m. Friday outside the Sandbar sports bar, which is located at 6752 Collins Ave.

The victim was brought by fire rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, but he died later that day as a result of his injuries, authorities said.

According to the arrest report, witnesses gave authorities a description of the suspect and stated that the victim and suspect had a physical argument inside the sports bar and were told to leave.

“In an effort to de-escalate the situation, bar employees told the subject to go to the rear of the bar, which is an enclosed patio area,” the report said. “The victim was instructed to exit the front entrance. Both parties fulfilled their expectations.”

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots minutes later and spotted the victim on the ground, bleeding from the head.

Witnesses reported that the suspect was the only person on the patio area at the time of the shooting.

According to police, surveillance video caught the incident inside Sandbar as well as the victim entering the rear patio area through an alley door.

“A gun shot is heard, and the victim is then seen running back toward the patio door,” the report said. “As the victim approaches the door, the subject is seen chasing her. The suspect is seen shooting the victim in the back of the head. The victim collapses and dies in the alley.”

According to police, West left the site of the shooting but was apprehended shortly thereafter.

Sanela Sabovic of Local 10 News met with a man who claimed to be friends with West and was startled to hear what transpired.

“He’s a good guy, he never bothers anybody,” claimed the man who preferred to remain anonymous. “He’s a quiet dude.”

As of Monday morning, West was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.
