3 people detained for shoplifting, leading North Texas police on car chase using stolen vehicle

Three people were detained Monday after allegedly shoplifting and leading police on a car pursuit in a stolen vehicle, according to the Mansfield Police Department.

Police say they were alerted to a shoplifting call at 3:02 p.m. at the Target store at 1801 North U.S. 287 Frontage Road. The caller provided detectives with a description of the suspect’s car, and police used a drone from its Drone First Responder program to search for the license plates, which revealed that the car had been stolen in Richardson earlier Monday.

According to officials, when officers arrived, the suspects fled the site. Police launched a car chase that ended in the 3900 block of Interstate 20 in Dallas after the suspects’ vehicle collided with a white Chevrolet Suburban that was stopped on the shoulder of the road. The Suburban had previously been involved in a collision, and everyone in the vehicle was outside exchanging information when the suspects crashed into it.

Police say Nelson Murray, 65, and Willie McNealy, 62, were arrested. Police established that Murray and McNealy left a third suspect, 63-year-old Erwin Roland, at the Target, where he was detained.

According to officials, when Roland was detained, police discovered $383.91 in stolen products, as well as $1,192.63 in stuff from the stolen car.

Murray faces charges of illegal use of a motor vehicle, escaping arrest with a vehicle, and organized retail theft. McNealy and Roland are both accused of engaging in organized retail theft. All three were brought to Mansfield Jail.

Police said there were no injuries as a consequence of the incident, but the investigation is still underway.
