A dog-related altercation in Coffee County turned fatal, killing a 34-year-old Douglas man and charging three others, including a teenager.
Deputies responded to a residence on Broxton West Green Highway on June 7 and discovered Dustin Ryan Bowen with several gunshot wounds. He was eventually pronounced dead, and what began as a dog fight swiftly escalated into a homicide inquiry, according to state officials.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office contacted state agents after deputies discovered Bowen’s injuries on the scene.
Investigators’ preliminary findings indicate that Bowen was shot many times during a canine-related dispute. The GBI said the case is still open and ongoing as agents work with local authorities to determine who did what and why.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, three persons have been charged in connection with the incident.
Breanalee Nichole Lollie, 24, of Douglas, was arrested by GBI investigators on a charge of murder conspiracy. Raymond Ressler, 18, was charged with aggravated assault, while a 16-year-old, whose identity has not been revealed, was charged with murder and aggravated assault.
According to officials, Lollie and Ressler have been placed into Coffee County Jail. The juvenile suspect was transferred to a regional youth jail center while the inquiry is ongoing.
Coffee County Sheriff Fred Cole described the incident as a preventable tragedy, urging citizens to think hard before letting their tempers flare.
“Any loss of life is tragic,” Cole said, adding that when conflicts arise, individuals should contact 911 rather than addressing others in person.
According to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and GBI agents remained on the site following the incident to investigate how a dog-related quarrel turned into gunfire.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is requesting that anybody with information about the case contact its Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at 912-389-4103. Tipsters can also provide anonymous information by phoning 1-800-597-TIPS (8477) or via the agency’s online tip site.
Officials say tips will be kept anonymous and used directly in the ongoing investigation.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, once the investigation is completed, the case file will be sent over to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for consideration. Prosecutors will next determine which formal charges to pursue as the GBI and local deputies continue to build the case.
